For this assignment, you will be critiquing the written aspect of a presentation or tutorial you have recently given, attended, or viewed. You are welcome to locate a tutorial on a topic that interests you on YouTube if none of these situations applies to you recently. Pick a presentation or tutorial that includes both a verbal component and a written component in the form of bullet points, notes for the audience, prompts for the speaker, or something similar in style so that you have a written component to critique. Be sure to provide your professor with the link to the presentation/tutorial at the beginning of your assignment.After reviewing the presentation/tutorial, answer the following questions:
Did this presentation/tutorial rely more heavily upon scholarly written communication or professional written communication, and what makes you say so?
How was the written component incorporated into the presentation/tutorial, and was this effective for engaging the audience?
Did you notice any editing, grammar, or formatting errors in the written communication?
In your own tutorial for the Signature Assignment, what are some ideas you gained from critiquing this presentation/tutorial that you would like to use in your tutorial? What are some things that you will avoid in your tutorial based on your critique?
In addition to answering the questions, develop a short list of best practices for incorporating written communication into presentations/tutorials and include that list at the end of your assignment. In the tutorial on “How to Present a Project Proposal”, the presenter Jennifer Bridges uses both verbal and written communication in giving tips on the best way to present a project and what to include in the presentation. The presentation relied heavily upon professional written communication since the presenter mostly used her own knowledge and expertise on the topic. The focus in this case was more on delivering the content, which is typical for professional writing (Cox, 2015). In addition, there was no reference to any other scholarly material apart from what was written on the board. This gives the idea that the presenter is knowledgeable in this area and therefore solely relies on her professional experience when giving the written communication.
The presentation involved both oral and written component. The written component was incorporated into the presentation in form of explanatory notes that were written on a board behind the speaker. Ideally, the presenter states a point and shows the same on the board. To some extent this was effective for engaging the audience because it was easier to make a connection between what was being said and the information written on the board. However, there was some limitation in that there were many words on the screen at the same time, which can interfere easily with the concentration of the audience.
While there were no editing errors in this written communication, there were some noticeable errors in grammar and formatting. To begin with, the writing was not consistent since some words were not legible enough. Some words appeared congested in such a way that the audience would have to look much closer and keenly in order to read and understand the word. Since a white board was used in this presentation, the board was not subdivided into different parts showing the subheadings that each part covered. This lack of proper formatting can make it hard to know what areas are being covered in the presentation.
In my tutorial for the Signature Assignment, I will use some of the ideas from this presentation such as ensuring that I am audible enough for the audience to hear what is being presented. Another idea I will use is ensuring that I practice adequately on the material so that I will not waste any time referring to other sources during the presentation. Accordingly, practice is noted to improve one’s writing skills to a level that can be accepted professionally (Cox, 2015).
