The book 1984 written by an English novelist, George Orwell, is considered one of the most well-known dystopian novels. This famous novel was first published in 1949 as “Ninety Eighty-Four: A Novel” by Secker & Warburg. This book is regarded as the author’s ninth and final book since Orwell has already been suffering from tuberculosis and was dying at that time. Orwell is known to be a democratic socialist which patterned the novel’s authoritarian government from Stalinist Russia. Thematically, the author effectively depicts the themes of totalitarianism, government surveillance, and mass media control. Moreover, the novel has portrayed the effects of being manipulated and controlled by a dictator in which history and people’s thoughts and lives are monitored without any exception and that people can’t escape. The significance of facts and truth in the political context and how they are manipulated are well-explored by Orwell in his novel. The relevance of the theme presented in the story can be closely applied to the current events of the present day.
The novel tells the story of an imagined future taking place in the year 1984. Across the entire globe, only three super nations exist – Eurasia, Eastasia, and Oceania, which are comprised of former countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and others. This world has been in a constant war with nations shifting from one allowance to another. All of these nations are controlled authoritatively which are manipulated through integrating surveillance, the monitored language used, and constant modification of the history. In this society, failure to follow their strict laws and regulations would result in perpetual retribution.
