In his third letter, "what is an American" Crevecoeur introduces the new land of the Europeans who do not know about it. He describes the rich sides of the land, employment opportunities, its difference with Europe and their relationships with nature. He also mentions the rules and ways of life of the Europeans. In his essay, Crevecoeur as the question of who a new man is. Therefore, through the different literal devices such as contrasting imagery, he is able to define what it means to be an American on the eve of the United States independence. As well, the farmer plays different roles in showing his vision for the Americans.
According to the author, being an American is not just a race but rather the man who is able to see the richness in all differences. The man acts with new principles and is a mixture of various nations such as French, Irish and German. He also points out that all the nations across the world can make a huge difference in the world by composing a race of men in the future. "from this promiscuous breed, the race now called Americans have risen" (Crevecoeur 68). He also argues out that America is the best society in the world so far. They do not have kings or princes, and there is no removal of the rich and the poor. It is a society of freedom whereby everybody is a citizen.
