1 Describe the current system in use as it applies to the operations personnel and marketing personnel.
A review of Med-Chem’s case study has revealed various strengths and flaws in the operations and marketing system that affect the company’s market share and production capability. The current system does not have a timely warning system, and Todd seemed to be finding out after problems had already occurred. A competent personnel system should anticipate problems and ensure that they are acted upon before they can be seen (Swink, Melnyk & Hartley, 2019). Med-Chem has different divisions; hence, it requires vigilant personnel that will foresee any problem and informs the executives. Additionally, the occurrence of a problem in the marketing personnel could affect the performance of the marketing personnel due to the interconnection between two.
Another defect in the system is the lack of responsibility among employees in the Med-Chem Hospital Division. There is a need for training workers in each division and presenting them with signs that could lead to more significant problems in the operations or marketing departments. In such a case, each worker will be responsible for his/her actions and behavior towards the company. Todd can blame a section of employees for the failure and low output within the division; therefore, emphasizing accountability and responsibility (Swink, Melnyk & Hartley, 2019).
Marketing flaws include the lack of information sharing and communication strategies with operations in the case of customer demand trends. If customers required high demand or there was the introduction of discounts or promotions, there was the need for information relay from the marketing section to the operations section. Marketing personnel should regularly and frequently inform operations personnel to ensure the correct analysis of the business units.
2 To what extent does this system help or hinder Med-Chem’s ability to achieve its objectives? Why?
A non-reliable and accountable system affects a company’s marketing and operations system in various factors such as time, cost, production, and profit (Swink, Melnyk & Hartley, 2019). In the case of Med-Chem, Todd claims that no employee is willing to take responsibility for any problem affecting the system. As a result, there is non-reliability and non-accountability among the workers; hence, problems can only be identified after they happen (Swink, Melnyk & Hartley, 2019). In the long-run, Med-Chem incurs more costs in handling problems after identification rather than it could if the problem was anticipated and handled at an early stage.
