In a TED Talk, “What’s so Funny About Mental Illness?”, Ruby Wax highlighted how she battled her mental illness with comedy. Wax provided an explanation between the relationship of humor and mental health. She shared her personal journey on mental health since she is diagnosed with clinical depression, specifically, how she broke down the barriers of stigma surrounding mental illnesses (Wax, 2012). According to Berger et al. (2021), humor is already incorporated in therapies for mental health illnesses. Therefore, it is possible to combat mental health illnesses using humor.
In the speech, the audience is drawn to Wax’s authenticity right at first. He shares her battle with clinical depression, a condition that is most often hidden by silence and shame. Through her own stories, she breaks down the myth that mental health concerns represent a lack of strength or perseverance. Instead, she redefines the story by transforming mental health to be a common human condition that may affect anyone without paying attention to his or her background and achievements (Wax, 2012).
