Circulatory and Respiratory System Introduction The heart is the main organ in the circulatory system that pumps blood throughout the body and is located in the thorax. The fist-sized heart is composed of cardiac muscle tissue allowing it to contract and relax rhythmically. The heart is made up of four chambers, two atria and two ventricles. Deoxygenated blood returns to the right side, right ventricle, and lungs, where carbon dioxide is released. Oxygenated blood flows to the left side of the heart and is pumped. The main function of the respiratory system is the gaseous exchange between the circulatory system and the outside world. This function is carried in the pulmonary alveoli. The respiratory system has the upper airways and the lower airways, and the lungs are divided into lobes. Method/ Materials Models of the hearts labeled and indicating the blood flow and a picture of a real heart are used in learning about the heart anatomy and circulatory system. There is an analysis of breathing. The external intercostal muscles contract and move the ribcage up and out when breathing in. There is an examination of the respiratory system and the functioning of the organs of the respiratory system. Procedure Heart and respiratory system models are used to study the circulatory and respiratory systems. The heart cardiac blood vessels, chambers, and pathway of blood are identified in the circulatory system. The purpose of the activities is to identify and analyze the organs of the respiratory system using the respiratory models.
