Hypothesis Testing
Research Question 1: A counselor who works with adults with anxiety disorders wants to know whether there is a relationship between scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS-A) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). He intends to study this by giving all new clients the two measures at intake and looking at their scores on the two measures. He will use the standard alpha value of .05. Based on this scenario, answer the following questions.
1. Does this question represent a correlational or experimental research design? Why?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
2. The presentation covers two models of reality on which we base our hypotheses: the alternative model and the null model. Which of these two would state that there is no relationship between scores on the HARS-A and the BAI?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
3. State the alternative hypothesis for this study.
ANSWER: (4 pts)
4. State the null hypothesis for this study
ANSWER: (4 pts)
5. Are your hypotheses directional or non-directional? How do you know this?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
6. Suppose you run the study, and the results come out with a p value of .12. What can you conclude about the relationship between the scores on these two measures?
ANSWER: (5 pts)
7. In this case, would you decide to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Why?
ANSWER: (5 pts)
Research Question 2: A clinical psychologist who works with women diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) wants to compare the two main treatment programs used to treat BPD. Specifically, her research question is whether Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is more effective than Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in treating BPD. She intends to study this using two samples of women, one which receives DBT and one which receives CBT. She will use the standard alpha value of .05. Based on this scenario, answer the following questions.
1. Does this question represent a correlational or experimental research design? Why?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
2. The presentation covers two models of reality on which we base our hypotheses: the alternative model and the null model. Which of these two would state that DBT is in fact more effective than CBT in treating Borderline Personality Disorder?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
3. State the alternative hypothesis for this study.
ANSWER: (4 pts)
4. State the null hypothesis for this study
ANSWER: (4 pts)
5. Are your hypotheses directional or non-directional? How do you know this?
ANSWER: (4 pts)
6. Suppose you run the study, and the results come out with a p value of .04. What can you conclude about the difference between the treatments?
ANSWER: (5 pts)
7. In this case, would you decide to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Why?ANSWER: (5 pts)

Research Question 1:
A counselor who works with adults with anxiety disorders wants to know whether there is a relationship between scores on the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS-A) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). He intends to study this by giving all new clients the two measures at intake and looking at their scores on the two measures. He will use the standard alpha value of .05. Based on this scenario, answer the following questions.
1. Does this question represent a correlational or experimental research design? Why?
The inquiry at hand embodies a correlational research framework. The counselor intends to analyze the correlation between scores on two measures without manipulating variables. This observational study aims to determine whether HARS-A and BAI scores are associated.
2. The presentation covers two models of reality on which we base our hypotheses: the alternative model and the null model. Which of these two would state that there is no relationship between scores on the HARS-A and the BAI?
The null model asserts no inherent link between scores on the HARS-A and the BAI. It assumes these measures are independent; any observed correlation is due to chance, lacks a significant relationship, and does not mean anything.
3. State the alternative hypothesis for this study.
