Overall Thoughts and Reaction
I think that the work by McGruder to investigate the subtle differences between the western perceptions of the disease and other cultures uncovers fundamental aspects that must be incorporated into the overall treatment modalities that have remained overlooked and undermined by western physicians. In this context, the writer states that “there were enough variations to suggest that the disease was shaped by something besides the purely genetic or biological” (McGruder 8). It illustrates that the persistent ignorance of cultural contributions to the incidences and prevalence of the condition disrupts and narrows the treatment options available. Thus, the article sheds light on the value of integrating this view while approaching this condition.
It was interesting to learn about the cautious yet meticulous approaches adopted by the non-western cultures while caring for relatives with schizophrenia. Unlike the more aggressive techniques used by the western practitioners, the Zanzibaris took a more accepting and therapeutic approach to assist their loved ones in navigating the torturous mental illness recovery journey.
