Research Methods. Evaluation of Research Methods. Statistics Project
To evaluate the relevancy and validity of a research article, you must be able to identify the research methods used in the research study and understand their advantages and disadvantages. In this short paper activity, identify the methodology of the same article you worked with last week.
Review the following article on alcohol consumption among first-time mothers and identify the research methods used in the study, specifically addressing the following:
Was this an observational or experimental study?
Describe the methods used to collect the data and explain why the methods are appropriate based on the research question.
Was the data collected quantitative or qualitative? Support your identification with examples from the study.
Describe the analysis method used to analyze the data, identifying the software that was used.
Discuss the potential weaknesses of the data collection and data analysis methods used. Support your discussion with specific details.
Describe the key demographics of the population sampled and identify the inclusion and exclusion criteria for participants.

Evaluation of Research Methods
Teressa, Bakketeig, and Magnus (2015) carried out an observational study to explore the link between alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy and the associated risk of pre-term births. The researchers used questionnaires as the main method of collecting data for the study. Each questionnaire contained questions on the number of alcohol usage each week, month, or lack of usage throughout. The Advantage of using the method of questionnaires was relevant for this study as it allowed the researchers to collect enough data for the study within a short time. Additionally, questionnaires simplified data collection as researchers could access significant data on the topic and easily compare with previous research conducted on the topic.
Data from Teressa et al.’s research study (2015) was quantitative. The quantitative method was chosen to answer the research question “How many…?” For instance, in table 1.0 of the study, the recorded number of mothers that had never consumed alcohol was 3040, representing a percentage of 7.7 of the overall 44,300 mothers that participated in the study. All the data tabulated is statistical for easier analysis. The table also captures other mo...
