Executive Summary
There are many benefits that accrue from information technology in health care. This is a plan that talks about electronic medical records (EMRs). It is an electronic system that readily avails accurate data to parties such as payers, patients, administrators, and providers (Chokshi & Mann, 2018). In essence, communications technology and advanced computing have greatly improved the quality of health as well as the cost. However, the new technological advancement in this sector has led to new vulnerabilities. For instance, electronic storage of data raises concern on data security as well as the privacy of patients. As indicated, vulnerabilities exist despite the use of advanced technical mechanisms. Facilities that use EMRs usually use a small physical space for storage of large electronic data. Additionally, the same small physical space is also used during dissemination of the stored information. Furthermore, the technical systems allow for creation and analysis of databases. The protection of health records has been at the topic of discussion in the past few years. There are different ways to deal with patient confidentiality, security, and privacy of data. In this summary, the term privacy has been used to imply the limit to the disclosure of personal information to a different party. On the other hand, the term confidentiality has been used to describe a situation where the release of information is controlled. Many organizations formulate confidentiality policies to uphold patient privacy by making the control rules of release of information unique. The term security comprises of several procedures and measures used to protect these systems and the information. The measures and procedures are put in place to maintain confidentiality. Furthermore, the organization will also be able to uphold the integrity and ensure that both information and the systems used to access it are available. It is possible for unauthorized people to access patient information through systems and networks available (Nelson, 2016). Following this, there is a need to address issues that are related to health care and information technology. In this manner, patients will be less reluctant to share information, thereby appreciating the provision of health care.
In line with security concerns, the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council was asked to propose measures that could be used to protect electronic health information. Institutions such as the Warren Grant Magnusson Clinical Centre of the National Institutes of Health, the National Library of Medicine and the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium have continued to push for patient privacy and confidentiality between the doctor and the patient.
